Yonhap reports:

A new personal information protection law is set to take effect this week, banning companies and website operators from collecting citizens’ resident registration numbers as the government steps up efforts to prevent identity theft, the home affairs ministry said Tuesday.

The law, which will go into effect on Thursday, comes after a series of recent personal data theft cases involving popular website operators as well as some credit card and financial companies.
