The Council of Europe will host its 4th Data Protection Day.  “On the Data Protection Day, events should be organised all over Europe to raise awareness on data protection and inform citizens of their rights and of good practices, thereby enabling them to exercise these rights more effectively.  The Data Protection Day should be a special occasion, a time set aside by each and every one of us to familiarise ourselves with a largely unknown, yet major, facet of our everyday lives.”

The Research Group on Law, Science, Technology & Society of the Vrije Universiteit Brussel (LSTS/VUB) will organize, together with other institutional, academic and corporate partners, a series of activities for Data Protection Day on 28 January 2010, including: a political debate on privacy at the European Parliament, pooling together decision makers, academics, youngsters, experts in communication and representative of the private sector and civil society; a Pecha Kucha; an awards ceremony of 3 prizes for civil society (best privacy campaign); for IT specialists (best privacy boosting technology); and for artists (best artistic expression of privacy); and a privacy party, with DJs and privacy technologies.

In the two following days, the LSTS/VUB, together with research centres and universities, will also organize the third edition of the Computers, Privacy and Data Protection conference – CPDP2010. The CPDP will be held in Brussels on the 29th and 30th January, and will host panels on stakeholders’ agendas and specific topics as well as parallel sessions on Ambient Intelligence, Cloud Computing, and data protection in Justice and Home Affairs.  Further information on the program, the call for papers, registration information, and the inscription are available on the website.
