The 110th Congress and Privacy: Dec. 10 – Dec. 14
The following bills were introduced in Congress during this week. These bills have all been entered in this site’s Proposed Legislation page on this site for future tracking.
1. A bill to amend the Foreign Intelligence Surveillance Act of 1978, to modernize and streamline the provisions of that Act, and for other purposes. S. 2440.
2. A bill to amend the Foreign Intelligence Surveillance Act of 1978, to modernize and streamline the provisions of that Act, and for other purposes. S. 2441.
Note: Senator Reid introduced S.2440 and S.2441 but after later consultation with other senators, decided not to go forward with them. The Senate will take up the Intelligence Committee’s version of S.2248 on Dec. 17th, with the Judiciary Committee’s other version of S.2248 offered as an amendment to the “base” bill.
3. A bill to amend the Communications Act of 1934 to protect the privacy rights of subscribers to wireless communications services. S. 2454.
In other actions this week:
- The House approved the Do-Not-Call Improvement Act of 2007,H.R. 3541, amended, to amend the “Do-not-call” Implementation Act to eliminate the automatic removal of telephone numbers registered on the Federal “do-not-call” registry. The Senate version of the bill is S.2096.
The Senate ordered favorably reported:
- S. 1965, to protect children from cybercrimes, including crimes by online predators, to enhance efforts to identify and eliminate child pornography, and to help parents shield their children from material that is inappropriate for minors, with amendments. (S. Rept. No. 110-245)
- S. 2096, to amend the Do-Not-Call Implementation Act to eliminate the automatic removal of telephone numbers registered on the Federal “do-not-call” registry, with an amendment in the nature of a substitute. (S. Rept. No. 110-246)
